Washing agents and detergents contain finely divided, water-soluble, synthetic crystalline Al silicates having compsn. 0.7-1.1 Cat2O. 1.0 Al2O3. 2.4-6.0 SiO2. 0.5-7.0 H2O (I) (where Cat is an alkali cation, esp., Na, exchangeable with Ca- and Mg ions), bonding hardness-formers of water and =1 further material having washing or cleansing properties. (I) is prepd. by aq. alkaline heat- treatment of a kaolin destructurised esp. by calcination. Treatment takes place in a soln. contg. a soluble silicate, e.g. at 50-150 degrees C in 24 hrs. W.r.t. anhydrous material, (I) consists of particles with specific crystal. (I) are used as phosphate builder substitutes in washing and cleaning solid materials in domestic or industrial use, esp. for washing textiles and machine-washing dishes. No mother liquors are formed during mfr. (I) has Ca bonding capacity 100-150 mg CaO/g at 20-90 degrees C.
