The silicates are made by the spray drying of an aq. alkali silicate soln. (a) also contg. the Al sal (b) of a straight chain aliphatic monocarboxylic acid contg. 14-26C-atoms. Soln. (a) pref. contains by wt. 0.01-4%, esp. 0.05-2% of salt (b), partic. aluminium-palmitate and/or-stearate; and the soln. may also contain 1-50%, esp. 10-30% of alkali sulphates, phosphates and/or carbonates; or alkali borates, e.g. sodium pentaborate. Used for the mfr. of silicate powders which can be employed, e.g. as fillers in plastics.
