The milking system for a number of cows incorporates a number of uprights (1) supporting the milking appliances, along the back of the cow stalls. A stand (14) along the back of the cow stalls supports a container (15) for the milk from the appliances, and a pump. A stationary vacuum pump has a first vacuum hose (17) leading to the separate milking appliances and to the containers (15). A second vacuum hose (21) connects the milking appliances to the containers (15). A hose (20) leads from the pump (16) to a collector tank.
