High temp cholesteric liq crystal compsn - contg 3-chloropropionate and arom esters of cholesterol, which do not crystallise on standing at room temp

A high-temp. cholesteric liq. crystal compsn. comprises (a) =50 wt. % a 3-choloropropionate ester of Ch (CH = O3-cholestaryl of O3-cholesteryl); (b) =5 wt. % of an ester of formula (I) (m = 0 or 1; p = 0 or 1; p+m = 1; n =0-3; X = 1-12; alkyl; 1-6C thioxy; 1-6C oxo-carbonyl; 1-12C non-oxocarbonyl; alkoxy; halo; Cn or NO2); and (c) 0-20 wt. % of an aliphatic ester of Ch. The compsns. do not crystallize on prolonged standing at room temp., have mesophase ranges above room temp., provide excellent colour spectra passing through the mesophase range and the mesophase temp. is the same whether it is reched by heating or cooling. They are useful in temp. indicating laminates consisting of a top transport film; an inter-film of the compsn. (pref. contg. 5-60 wt. % polymeric binder) and a block backing.
