The drive achieves high velocities with the minimal use of electrical energy. The forseen applicators are in air and space travel where high electrical current sources are undesirable due to their high mass. The drive employs fixed (E1) and moving (E2) magnets. The fixed magnets are attached to the body to be driven whilst the moving magnets run in guides. At the start of the cycle both have the same magnetisation direction. The moving magnets are then reversed and increased in strength, the repulsion causing the accelerating force on the body. The moving magnet field strength is increased so that as they approach each other they again repell. The fixed magnet field strength is reduced and the moving magnets return to their starting position.
