The exciter (7) is of the homopolar type with axial main field winding (13) between two stator sections (9). The rotator carries the armature winding (15) which is connected to the generator (1) field winding (2) through rectifying diodes (19). In parallel with the rectified exciter output there is an additional exciter field winding (14) located between the rotor sections and augmenting magnetomotive force from the main excitation winding. The purpose of this addional winding (14) is to increase the generator excitation voltage to compensate for the rise in generator field resistance due to heating. The operating characteristics of a homopolar machine are such that in this application an increase in load resistance leads to an increase in generated voltage. Thus self compensation for generator field resistance increase is provided.
