Composting domestic and municipal waste - by pressing into separate pieces and piling into heaps with good aeration and dewatering properties

Composting solid, sludgy or liq. waste materials such as domestic refuse and clarified municipal sludge to give an at least partially rotted mixt. with a medium fine structure and a moisture content of is approx. 50%, comprises (a) forming the waste into pressed pieces by pressing under high compaction, and (b) piling the pressed pieces into triangular, quadrilateral or slab-shaped heaps using an automatic coordinated conveyor system, onto a composting area in the open or under cover, so that the pressed pieces, due to their size and strength, only break into a few large pieces with a coarse broken structure to give a heap contg. numerous hollow spaces, which undergoes optimum natural aeration and dewatering. Pref. the height of the conveyor throw above the composting area is variable to give optimum sized pieces throughout the heap. The composting area may also be provided with air channels to allow natural or artificial passage of air form below to assist rotting and moisture release. Process gives good composting of domestic and municipal waste in compost heaps having optimum aeration and dewatering properties.
