The collector has a transparent cover (1) exposed to solar radiation and an insulated base (3). The absorber (2) is contained between them and arranged with a gap (4) between itself and the cover and a gap (5) between itself and the base. The absorber is a porous mass of fibrous structure of glass, plastics or metal wire. Air enters from one side through the gap (4) between the absorber and the cover and after flowing through the absorber leaves from the other side through the gap (5) between the absorber and the base. Absorption of radiation takes place throughout the thickness of the absorber and heat transfer to the air also takes place throughout the whole thickness.
