The thermal insulating material comprises a foil of synthetic material to which a reflective metallic layer has been applied by vapour deposition. To avoid oxidation, the metallic layer is protected by a layer of varnish. The varnish contains a soluble colouring agent which is only active in the visible part of the spectrum. The varnish does not absorb radiation in the infrared part of the spectrum and the mirror-like reflectivity of the foil is reduced without affecting the thermal insulating properties of the foil. The foil is then more suitable for surface applications where visible reflection can be disagreeable.
