The hydraulic torque converter comprises parallel input and output shafts. A first and a second gear pump each have one of their gears secured to the input shaft. A gear motor has one of its gears secured to the output shaft. Adjacent the second pump are arranged at least two pairs of idle gears, the gears of each pair being freely rotatable on the respective shafts. One or more of the idle pairs can be pressed axially into frictional engagement with the gears of the second pump thereby to participate in the output of that pump to the motor. The axial pressure on the idle gears is supplied by the first pump and the selection is made by a valve system.
