Photoconductive polymer prodn. by acylation of polyvinyl alcohol - with acid chloride giving film-forming property, used in electrophotography

Esterification of (PVA) with carbonyl chlorides is carried out in tert. carbonamides esp. N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP) as solvent. The acid chloride pref. has the COCl gp. attached to a photo conductive system pref. with a higher condensed aromatic system so that the modified polymer is photoconductive. The method overcomes the problem of producing polymers contg. large aromatic rings in the side chains together with a backbone long enough to give the required film-forming property, transparency and adhesion. In an example poly-vinyl-2-naphthalenecarboxylic ester was prepd. by reacting PVA with 2-naphthoyl chloride in NMP in the presence of pyridine under anhydrous conditions.
