Carpet tufting machine has a slide provided with a number of needles which are displaced selectively under a plunger which is controlled by a programme to actuate the needles into their tufting position. Plunger has the vertical displacement movement which is transferred to the needles imparted by the housing. Also in the needle set only the middle needle is displaced whilst the outer ones are held back by interposers. Plungers and their associated needle carriers are arranged in juxtaposition over a width of several meters to produce a carpet of useful width. Patterned tufted carpets are produced without the need of time consuming bobbin changing.
