To achieve full utilisation of available energy in hydroelectric and, more particularly, in wind powered generating plants it is proposed to regulate the turbine speed to the required value by regulating the electrical load directly. This is achieved by having a multi-machine unit with a common drive shaft (1) coupling all the rotors (3) together. The corresponding stators (2) are axially moveable in guides and on rails, and the number of stators which are fully linked with their rotors is determined by the available energy. The automatic control system regulates the shaft speed to the desired value by adjusting the stator position of the various machines until the input and output energy are balanced. Regulation of turbines is thus avoided and full use can be made of the available wind or water flow.
