The silencer constructed is basically as described in 2638632 with the initial expansion chamber (12) separated from the chamber following (8) by a multi-flow-path portion formed by a ceramic insert (6) with grooves or other penetrations. However this insert is now specified to be tubular, with sets of internal (11) and external (5) grooves of differing cross-section, forming flow paths with the tubular metal parts over (1) and inside (15) which the insert fits. The walls of the flow reversing chamber (8) linking the two multiple flow paths are lined at least partially with sound absorbing material (16), supported by perforated plate if necessary.
