Internal insulation for hot gas ducts with pressure fluctuations - has perforated cover plate and internal baffles to resist gas movement, used e.g. for gas cooled nuclear reactor system or gas turbine
A thermal insulation for surfaces which are subjected to a hot gas flow in which sudden pressure changes can occur comprises perforated cover plates or sheets for the insulation on the hot side and a liner or a pressure vessel wall on the opposite side with insulation contained between them. Metal plates embedded in the insulation are fixed at their lower ends to the pressure vessel wall or liner and terminate, at their opposite or upper ends just short of the perforated plate. These plates prevent flow of gas longitudinally inside the insulating layer. Used esp. for high pressure gas ducts where sudden changes of pressure can occur, e.g. in gas turbines. The system is esp. suitable for flat surfaces, i.e. surfaces other than the interior of cylindrical ducts.
