Desoldering iron, esp. for removing solder from a joint on an electronic component, employs a heated tubular bit through which the molten solder is sucked into a collection chamber in the iron handle, which also contains a vacuum pump applying the suction to the bit. The vacuum pump is pref. located next to the collection chamber, esp. via a short pipe and a filter preventing the solder from reaching the pump, and a filter preventing the solder from reaching the pump, which is driven by a low-voltage d.c. motor fitted in the iron handle, esp. via gears and a coupling. A push button switch controls the pump, which pref. has a rotating piston fitted with four blades of self-lubricating plastic set at intervals of 90 degrees w.r.t. each other; the rotor speed is pref. several thousand r.p.m. Precision desoldering, where no mechanical stresses are imposed on the bit which might damage the workpieces is provided.
