Injection of oxygen into large vessel contg. molten steel - with simultaneous use of a vacuum for decarburising the steel

Plant for the vacuum treatment of molten metal, esp. steel treated with oxygen and/or substances evolving O2 in the melt. A vessel is fitted with a lid contg. at least one measuring appts. (1) and a charging device (2) fitted above a spray shield contg. holes aligned with (1,2). The lid also contains two shearing punches, which can be driven through the holes in the spray shield to remove any deposit and can then be retracted so they do not obscure the field of view of appts. (1) nor the path taken by the charge falling from device (2). The shearing punches are pref. circular discs matching the hole dias. and eccentrically mounted on guide rods which can be rotated. Used for the VOD process, viz. decarburisation of steel with O2 and the simultaneous use of a vacuum, where e.g. 30 tonnes of molten steel are treated with 14 Nm.3 O2/minute.
