The air space between the flat cover and the energy absorber of a solar cell has angled baffles which minimise air convection currents. The lessened degree of air circulation gives a lower loss of heat by convection to the top cover, and hence higher overall efficiency of the cell. The solar cell has a transparent flat top cover and a heat-absorbing blackened collection layer, the latter having inter-connected heat transfer medium flow pipes for removing the absorbed energy. Between the top cover and the collector there are a number of transparent intermediate baffle walls, angled to the cover and the absorber, which prevent recirculation of the heated air in this air space back to the top cover plate.
