The solar heating system has collector plates (100) with a base (1) made of foamed plastics, such as polystyrol or polyurethane resin, with a zig-zag groove (2) inset in it. The surface of the groove is compressed hard. This is covered by a blackened metal plate (3) thus forming a flow path for the heat exchange liquid. Inlet and outlet connections (6) are incorporated at the ends of the groove at diagonal corners of the plate. The blackened plate carries a zig-zag transparent film (4) acting as a spacer for a transparent top plate (5), and forming a set of parallel chambers at right angles to the flow channels underneath. In an alternative design, the base is supported by a downwardly extending integral flange each side.
