Calcium and phosphorus irradiation esp. for in-vivo investigation - uses californium as neutron source for highly localised target

Irradiation plant for activating calcium and phosphorus by the in-vivo method, is claimed. A neutron source (Ie is used and shielding protects the environment and all parts of the human body other than that under investigation from the radiation emitted by this source. (I) is of Cf-252 and has an elongated cylindrical form and the shieldings consists of a moderator and an absorber component. (I) can be moved from a storage position within the shielding to an irradiation position within the moderator, where an access opening, e.g., for the human arm or hand, permits the local part of the body to be brought close to the neutron source; it is held in position near to the cource by a fixing inside thin access duct. Used for the radiological investigation of the mineral content of human bones, esp. by a localised method.
