The components of the earth's magnetic field strength in the direction sough and in the direction perpendicular to it are measured electrically by the Hall effect and the angular deviation from the direction of the earth's magnetic field is computed by relating these components to one another, using the formula em=arctg U1/U-, where U1, and U- are the measured Hall voltages in the direction sought and the direction perpendicular to it. Speed is determined by measuring an electrical variable induced from the earth's magnetic field and the instantaneous current in an electrical conductor extending at right angles to the direction of movement.
