The thermodynamic underwater propulsion system comprises a prime mover independent of its environment driving a propeller, exhausting water soluble gas. The propeller (22) is in the cylindrical middle portion (26), of a duct with divergent inlet (24), and convergent jet outlet (28); pref. having a sound-deadening coating. Exhaust gas is piped (32) to the middle portion of this duct downstream from the propeller. It is discharged into the duct via a tubular grid with a large number of evenly dispersed nozzles, pointing downstream. The cooling circuit inlet (38) for the power unit should pref. be in a duct between the propeller and exhaust discharge outlet (40) upstream of the propeller.
