The ski binding with safety release mechanism uses a slide (3) which moves laterally relative to the ski and inc. a low friction slide guidance system. The arrangement works independently of the shoe profile, with the release mechanism acting exclusively on the side. A sole-gripping claw is mounted on the slide. The slide (3) can be withdrawn completely from the ski. Connecting cables may be used to prevent complete severance and the slide serves as the shoe support plate. The releas mechanism locks the slide in the operational position and inc. a shore retention claw. The guidage system may inc. idling rollers (13, 14), balls or built in runners which are appended to the ski, and may use freely translatable roller cages. The rollers may be mounted on a frame or a "circuit" type anchorage (2) with axies normal to the major ski plane. The slide edges are located by roller grooves and the release mechanism may be a rotary cam (28) with a flat (31) engaging a sprung buffer (34).
