Gas tight joint for IC engine exhaust pipes - permits relative pipe movement and has flanged pipes and sleeve over packing rings

The gastight joint, esp. for IC engine exhaust pipes, permitting relative movement between pipes comprises a cylindrical sleeve (4) of larger bore than the pipes (1, 2) with at one end an internal flange (6) fitting closely around the latter. In the space (5) between pipes and sleeve are elastic packing rings (13-15) which in combination with flanges (11, 12) on the pipes, prevent gas leakage but separate (3) pipe ends to give some freedom of movement, universally. Joint is held together, compressed as necessary by a flanged insert (7) externally welded to sleeve plain end. Packing rings can be of various materials and forms.
