Cooling chamber for IC engine afterburner - has second stage of cooling using same cooling tubes as first stage

The afterburner of an i.c. engine has a cooling section downstream of the burner chamber. Gases enter this section through two perforated plates (1, 2) and impinge on baffle plates which are formed by one side of cooling tubes (4). A perforated ceramic plate (6) is held longitudinally between two such cooling tubes. The gases pass through it and enter a second cooling chamber. They impinge on the far wall of this which has the atmosphere on its other side. The gases are cooled in this second chamber both by the atmosphere on one side of it and by the cooling tubes on the other side. A second stage of cooling is thus obtained with a single set of cooling tubes.
