The deep-water pipe for the transport of oil or natural gas is laid in the form of a link chain. The links are formed by sections of corrugated pipe or expansion joints of suitable design at regular intervals, so that lengths of rigid pipe are formed into a freely bending chain. The design allows the weight of pipe to be greatly reduced, since it does not have to be thick enough to withstand the bending loads occurring when laying a conventional rigid pipeline.
