The walking toy animal has four telescopic legs (2) with the upper end (13) mounted on a pivot (12) in the plate (11) forming part of the animal. A rotating shaft (20) carries a crank (21) with a slot (22) which engages a pin (19) which is rigidly attached to the lower end of the leg (2). The other end of the pin fits in a slot formed by two circular arcs (16') in the plate (11). As the pin moves along the lower slot (16') the foot (15) is in contact with the ground so that the body is moved forward. As the pin moves along the upper slot the foot is lifted clear of the ground. The motion of the four legs is synchronised to give the correct sequence of leg movements.
