The built-in fendering for boats comprises rigidly fixed impact and rubbing absorbing units so spaced along the sides of the boat that a straight line joining adjacent unit faces does not touch them. Each unit has a permanent (9) and a consumable (10) part. The permanent part is conventionally, permanently or removably, secured to the hull. The consumable part, pref. of rubber, synthetic resin or light alloy, fits over the permanent part. It slopes at front and back and carries a rubbing strip (11) pref. of spring steel covering the contact line. A vertical pin (15) through the consumable part into the top of the permanent part holds them together. The hole (16) in the former is oversize to permit flexing; a handle (13) facilitates manipulation.
