Recovery of a substance rich in V from the thermal gasification of liq. hydrocarbons with O2 and steam at 10-120 bar and 1000-1600 degrees C involves scrubbing the prod. gas with water and discharging the spent wash liquor contg. solid residues from the gasification, (pt. of) the solid being sepd. and dried to give the required substance. The soot pref. is recycled until its V content reaches a certain level, then this level is maintained by removing part of the discharged liquor for solid recovery. The solid obtd. has a V content of 1-25 wt.%. The heavy metal content is restricted, in spite of recirculation of the soot washed from the prod. gas, without causing environmental pollution, as occurs when pt. of the solid is burnt with oil taken from the cycle. Pollution of the waste liquor with heavy metals is also avoided. The prod. can be used in smelters and its scale covers at least part of the cost of processing the solid.
