Non:carcinogenic tobacco prodn. - by impregnating the (dried) leaves with a saccharide and/or a saccharide-producing enzyme

A non-carcinogenic tobacco contains a saccharide (I) or a saccharide-forming enzyme (II). Use of (I) and/or (II) forms non-carcinogenic pyrazine derivs. with the aminoacids present in the tobacco when the latter is burned instead of the acids forming carcinogenic benzpyrenes. The quality and taste of the smoke is also improved. (I) are pref. carbonyl-contg. saccharides, e.g. aldoses or ketones, and w.r.t. the formation of benzpyrenes, are esp. (oligo)pentoses. (I) include amylase, cellulose, diastase, etc. (I) are applied to the leaves of tobacco pref. by impregnating the latter with a soln. thereof to leave, esp. 1-15 wt.% (I) in the leaves. If (II) be used, the amount applied should be such as to leave that quantity of (I) as well.
