The guard assembly partic. for lathes, has a cowl preventing access to a moving workpiece from the normal operator's position while maintaining visibility, although access can be gained when desired. The cowl (1) when assembled comprises a rear wall (5), a top section (4) and a front wall (40), and means are provided for moving it up and down and locking at any desired height, for pivoting it sideways, and for securing it to the lathe bed or saddle. Raising, lowering and pivoting can be effected by a rigid assembly of two vertical bars (11, 12) joined at the top by a horizontal bar (10) extending a considerable way beyond them. The lower end of one vertical bar (11) rotates in a holder (34), and a tubular sleeve (14) slides up and down it. The part of this sleeve towards the other bar (12) is joined to a component fitting (15) part of the way round it to act as a guide during up and down movement, and on the opposite side the sleeve is joined to a mounting (30) for the cowl.
