The particles are injected into a first acceleration cavity of a threshold linear accelerator. They pass through a diaphragm into a second acceleration cavity adjacent to the first, and from it through a diaphragm to a third acceleration cavity, adjacent to the second. The first and third acceleration cavity are excited by a first electromagnetic standing wave, and the second acceleration cavity by a second electromagnetic standing wave. The two standing waves phases in adjacent acceleration cavities differ by 180 deg.
