The forklift truck has a mast mounted on a slide working in guide rails between two chassis cross-members and at right angles to a lengthwise member. The slide (14) has a driving lug (19) protruding from one or both sides into one of the cross-members (1), so as to engage with a drive mechanism (20-22), accommodated inside the member and running parallel to the guide rail (12) for its entire length. Alternatively there can be drive mechanisms in both cross-members, engaged by lugs on both sides of the slide. The mechanisms can comprise chains running round sprockets.
