Walls of reactors, distillation columns or pipes having a thin protective jacket e.g. of PTFE, FEP, PVC or rubber are guarded against corrosion and/or peeling-off when the installation is under reduced pressure by introducing a protective film of a fluid i.e. a gas or liq., between wall and jacket. The protective fluid is kept in a hermetically sealed cycle or circulates in a dosed but periodically dischargeable, cycle. The protective fluid may be chemically inert, or reactive in that it may form a cpd. with the corrosive material as the latter diffuses through the protective jacket, or it may act as an ad- or absorbent. Used in appts. or conveyance lines for receiving or transporting corrosive materials, in which reduced pressure is generated or maintained.
