Mechanism, transporting material in particle form, has an inlet and an outlet at top and bottom respectively. Between the inlet and outlet is a hose-type passage with a flexible wall, against which a compression mechanism acts locally. This continuously shuts off the passage between the inlet and outlet, but moves the compression point cylically to allow material to pass from inlet to outlet. The hose-type passage can be of flat form, with two flexible walls joined together along the edges. The compression mechanism can have two or more components, typically rollers, so mounted that the upper-most one compresses the hose before the lower one releases it, in order to release material trapped in the hose between them.
