Expansion gaps between the structural slabs of a reinforced road are disguised by bridging the gaps with a 'T' profile pad incorporating coarse metallic mesh in a cast asphalt composition of high damping capacity. The asphalt matrix pref. incorporates by wt. 15-25% bitumen, 2-8% resin (polypropylene), 2-10% asbestos fibres, 10-70% filler, 20-40% sand, 20-40% fine gravel and 0-5% crumb rubber. Pads are sufficiently viscoelastic to accommodate relative thermal movements of adjacent slab edges, strong enough to support traffic loads and have sufficient damping capacity to suppress dynamic fatigue of the pad against the edges of the supporting panels.
