Aromatic polymers having diamide chains:- -(NH-Ar1-NH-CO-Ar-CO)-, chains of the metallic salt of arylene bis(phenylene phosphinic) 4,4'-dicarboxylic acid (I) having formula:- where Ar is divalent aromatic, aliphatic or arylaliphatic; Ar1 is divalent aromatic; Ar2 is at least 6C trivalent aromatic; Ar3 is tetravalent aromatic; M is alkali metal; chains (I) are present in ratio of at least 2 (4) per 100 total chains. The polymers are thermally stable, non-flammable, free from after-glow and can be processed as threads, fibres or films (or as solutions).
