Growing lawn in shallow receptacle - using solid growth medium covered with woven polypropylene sheet

Lawn is grown from grass or other botanical species in a solid growth medium in a shallow receptacle, so that the resulting root systems can interweave into a sheet. Themedium is (partially) covered by a sheet of a matl. which transmits light, during at least part of the growth period. Pref. the sheet is of interlaced polypropylene; it is placed on the medium during the start of growth, and completely covers it. The sheet is permeable to air and water. A sheet of matl. preventing the penetration of roots may be placed on the inner face of the receptacle's bottom. The seeds of a short-lived species with rapid rooting may be added initially to the growth medium. The lawn can be watered without removal of the covering.
