The title additive is prepd. by introducing viable microorganisms isolated or cultured from a ruminants rumen fluid into a nutrient mixt. consisting essentially of an aq. suspension of a starch-contng. concentrate feed comprising =1 of grain, alfalfa, milo, cottonseed meal, linseed meal and soybean meal, culturing the suspension under CO2 at 30-50 deg C. through stages sufficient to ensure complete in vitro adaptation of the microorganisms to the feed, and collecting the adapted microorganisms as the required feed prod., the adaptation being determined by =1 of the following two procedures (i) a 1 litre culture, cultured on 87% concentrate feed with artificial saliva mixt for 24 hrs. at 39 deg C. analyses =0.05 mg./ml. 1-lactic acid; and (ii) an 11 litre fermentation culture, cultured as in (i) analyses =3.5 mg./ml. volatile fatty acids. The additive may be given, for example, to ruminants shifted from a high cellulose-concentration to a high starch-concentration; its administration greatly shortens the adaptain period.
