Finishing rolls of polymer textiles - using X-rays produced by electron bombardment of surrounding metal target

A textile sheet, esp. a knitted or woven, tension-sensitive, polyamide or polyester fabric is chemically modified by contacting the fabric with polymerisable cpds. and subjecting it to X-rays produced by collision. The fabric is irradiated with X-rays produced in a target by bombardment with high energy electrons. The fabric is pref. wound as a roll onto a bar and this is at least partly surrounded by the target (for bombardment). The target may comprise a material of high atomic number, esp. a metal, pref. tungsten or gold. During irradiation, the bar can be rotated. The high penetration depth of the X-rays makes the treatment of a roll, e.g. up to 30 cm. thick, possible.
