Water-in-oil emulsions stable in gastro-intestinal tract - for removing poisons or slow-release drug administration

An emulsion for removing poisons from the gastro-intestinal tract, the emulsion being stable in the tract, comprises an internal phase (A) enclosed by an outer phase (B) which is immiscible with the aq. environment in the tract, contains a surfactant and is permeable to the poison. The inner phase (A) contains a reagent, or a catalyst which is insol. in phase (B) and can make poison diffusing into phase (A) harmless. A stable emulsion for slow release of medicaments into the gastro-intestinal tract comprise a medicament emulsified in a water-immiscible phase in which the medicament is 0.01-10 wt. % soluble. Esp. for removing NH3 or urea poisons (using phases (A) contg. an acid or urease resp.) or for administering Na salicylate, trimethaphan, camphor sulphonate, trimethadione, metronidazol or penicillin O (pref. in water-sol. K salt form).
