The flywheel is magnetically suspended, and has a passive radial magnetic centring mechanism (200) at each end of a rotor housed in a stator, also an active acial centring mechanism (206) controlled by a speed measuring unit, a damper, and a commutator motor-generator (202). Each passive centring mechanism has two coaxial magnet rings (7, 8) on the rotor and of opposite polarity, enclosed between two other coaxial magnet rings (9, 10) on the one side, whose axial magnetic field passes through a yoke (17) in the stator. There are two further such rings with a yoke (5, 6, 18) on the other side. The axial centring unit has a radially magnetised ring (63) on the rotor, opposite a circular winding (65) on the stator (2), to which correction signals are delivered from the axial speed and position measuring units. The damper has magnet rings (49-52) on the rotor and a conductive disc (61) on the stator. The motor-generator has a ring on the rotor with sections of opposite polarity (25), opposite windings on a circular ferromagnetic core (21). The portions of the windings in the air gap generate magnetic forces allowing continuous rotation of the ring (25) by successive commutation of the active ring windings.
