An indicator warning that soil in a pot is drying out has a sponge in contact with the soil to transfer humidity to paper which forms part of a contrasting decorative pattern of a decorative plastic escutcheon (2) with a peripheral rim (3). The paper covered by a protective element (5) and attached to the escutcheon by studs (6). A pattern may be formed in this element bu having transparent and opaque coloured areas. A crown (14) with teth (13) houses the sponge (10) which is lightly compressed when the escutcheon is mounted in a hole in the side of the plant pot (1).
