The combined guard (11) and workpiece support (10) is for use in power driven knife sharpening grinders. An adjustable plate (30) which is mountedon the support (20) enables the cutting edge of a knife to be set and/or varied. The grinder is of the wheel type and a plane wheel face (17) is used to sharpen knives. The guard (11) is of a cylindrical pan shape and slides axially over the grinder. The axial station of the guard may be varied as the grinder wears, and the knife makes grinder contact through a guard window (18). The support (20) comprises a bar of rectangular cross section which is fixed diametrically and horizontally onto the external face of the guard. The adjustable plate (30) may be elongated so as to span the support (20) and have triangular end returns (32, 33).
