A dough hopper is mounted above a conveyor on to which divided dough pieces are discharged from the hopper outlet. Between the hopper outlet and the conveyor band, an automatic sensing device is fitted to detect dough extending as an extrusion from the open outlet of the hopper. When this detection is made, a dough cutter is actuated to shut off the outlet and detach the suspended extrusion as a dough piece to drop on to the band. The sensing device can be adjusted so that cut-off is actuated for different extrusion lengths, i.e., to adjust dough piece weight. The sensing device pref. comprises a light source and photo-electric cell. The dough hopper can pref. be sealed and the dough put under slight pneumatic pressure. The dough cutter is pref. a guillotine blade actuated by a double effect pneumatic power cylinder. Used as automatic dough divider for industrial bakeries. Large scale prodn. of dough pieces of adjustable, uniform weight which have not been subjected to dividing stresses harmful to the dough is possible.
