Cinchona alkaloids are converted into their steric isomers by oxidn. in presence of a hydride acceptor and an alkaline alcoholate, followed by redn. in presence of a hydride donor, in an organic solvent, the solvent being distilled in the course of the oxidn. and the ketone being distilled in the course of the redn. The products have pharmacological activity. The conversion is rapid and gives good yields 50%.
