Classification of water supplies by the catalytic osidn. of metal salts contained therein, in order to render them readily floculable, comprises using O2 in air as the oxidising agent and, as catalyst, a mineral or organic porous material impregnated with a suitable metal oxide, e.g., MnO2, Fe2O3, V2O5, Pt black or Ag2O. The porous material is pref. active C, pumice, coke, microporous polystyrene or expanded polystyrene. The process is partic. useful for oxidn. of Fe2+ salts in aq. soln. e.g., by passing air into a tower down which the Fe2+ soln. trickles. The catalyst is pref. introduced in the dry state into the appts. where the air is admitted and in which the aq. liquor is flocculated.
