The device reduces the pressure of a compressed medium, the ratio between the two pressures being at least equal to the critical value corresponding to sonic medium flow. It has two distinct and successive expansion chambers (2a, 2b), each chamber being such that its ratio of pressure reduction is less than the critical value at which sonic flow would be obtained. Each chamber can be formed by a divergent pipe and a load-loss generator (3a, 3b). There may be a cylindrical chamber connected to the downstream end of the divergent pipe, while the load-loss generator is mounted in the central area of the chamber, between the upstream and downstream connections.
