Multi-purpose muscle exerciser comprises counterweights mounted on carriages which move between parallel columns by means of four nylon pulleys. The weights are thus maintained perfectly within their columns, and the pulleys allow smooth quiet running of the appts. In an example, the appts. comprises a frame of square-section tubes within which the columns are fixed by stays. The carriages consist of rectangular frames on which are welded supports for the pulleys. The weights are strung onto the central tube welded vertically to the bottom of the carriage, and stacked to obtain the desired load. To the top centre of the carriage is welded a half-ring for fixing a traction cord. The pulleys receive traction cords fixed to the carriages at one end and to traction bars at the other end.
