The measurement device is for the determination of a.c. in a high voltage line. A tapping system (4) near the line (2) provides an alternating electrical signal which is proportional to the current flowing in the line, the sense of this signal corresponding to the direction of the current. An electroluminescent system receives this electrical signal and emits a luminous flux representative of it. A light transmission system, based on fibre optics, receives the light flux near the line and transmits it to a point remote from the line. A light receiver system receives this luminous flux and provides an electrical signal representative of its value. A direct current generator (14, 16, 18) is placed near the line (2). The electroluminescent system comprises an electroluminescent diode (6) which is supplied by the alternating electrical signal and also by a direct current which flows in the forward direction for the diode and is provided by the direct current generator. Thus the diode's light flux output has both steady and alternating components.
